A Mala is a spiritual tool used during meditation and mindfulness practices that comes from Eastern Traditions. It is made of 108 beads made of either wood/stones/crystals to be used like stepping stones, or markers, during your Meditation. Like prayer beads, a Mala is used to count or track your recitation of a Mantra or Affirmation. In doing so, you encourage a state of calm and focus by allowing your mind and body to work together, one bead at a time.
The large, central bead above the tassel is called a Guru bead. The Guru bead symbolizes the teacher(s) that have shared light and awareness into your life. Therefore, you honor your teacher(s) by starting your recitation using the bead next to the Guru bead. The Guru bead stands alone and thus allows you to realize you've come to the end of the Mala and therefore your Meditation.
Start with the bead next to the Guru bead. Hold the bead between your thumb and second, third or fourth finger. Hold the rest of your mala in your opposite hand. Repeat your Mantra or Affirmation once for each bead. When you've made it all the way around to the Guru bead you can stop or turn back the way you came and start again going the opposite direction. Never stepping on or crossing over the Guru Bead.
